As one of its pillars, the company, and its Chevrolet brand work for gender equality in each of its areas.
One of the leading companies when it comes to empowering women is General Motors. Together with its Chevrolet brand, it has positioned itself as an example of gender equity around the world, with a clear goal: to have 40% women in leadership positions by 2030.
This work has landed in GM’s operations in Colombia. Locally, the organization increased women’s participation in growth opportunities from 25% in 2020 to 45.6% by 2021.
Updated data indicates that in 2022 this figure is 33.3%. Results that demonstrate compliance with institutional guidelines in favor of gender equality.
“We seek to reduce, in Colombia, gender gaps and position girls and young women in our industry and, in addition, in areas such as technology and accounting, professions that every company needs to grow the company and expand the empowerment that we have been working on ”, said Santiago Ángel, director of Government Relations, Communications and Corporate Social Responsibility of General Motors.
Likewise, in terms of administrative and operational positions in the plant, the participation of women went from 23% in 2020 to 36% in 2021. The company projects growth for 2022.
“For us, it is more than necessary to enhance the value of women from a young age, so that they fulfill and develop their dreams and goals,” added Ángel.
Equity is a social value
The General Motors social and corporate responsibility program adds to its approaches to access to education in equal social and economic conditions, a promise that influences and generates an impact on societies, breaking down false limitations and stereotypes.
This is why GM works hand in hand with the NGO Fundación Plan, in a program that supports girls and young people from vulnerable areas to develop their potential, protect their rights, increase their participation in the communities and promote their permanence in school.
Thus, General Motors announced the delivery of STEM scholarships to the Plan Foundation, in engineering, technology, and accounting careers. “We want to make a call to action for learning for those girls and young women who do not have easy access to education. It is important to generate value in them, enhance their knowledge and give them tools that help them to be great professionals and elements of transcendence not only nationally but also internationally”, concludes Ángel.
